A moderate decrease in temperature inhibits the calcium signaling mechanism(s) of the regulatory volume decrease in chick embryo cardiomyocytes BJMBR
Souza,M.M.; Boyle,R.T..
Chick cardiomyocytes, when submitted to hyposmotic swelling, exhibit a partial regulatory volume decrease (RVD). A Ca2+ influx by stretch-activated channels signals a taurine efflux and the RVD at 37°C. We evaluated the cell's performance at room temperature. Cardiomyocytes isolated and cultured from 11-day-old chick embryos were submitted to a hyposmotic solution (180 mOsm/kg H2O) at 37°C and at room temperature (26°C). Under these conditions we measured the changes in cell volume as well as the intracellular free Ca2+ (using fura-2). During hyposmotic swelling, cells at 37°C displayed a peak relative volume of 1.61 ± 0.03 and recovery to 1.22 ± 0.04 (N = 14), while cells at 26°C presented a peak swell relative volume of 1.74 ± 0.06 and did not recover...

Morphometry of the midgut of Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides (Lepeletier) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) during metamorphosis Neotropical Entomology
Cruz,LC; Araújo,VA; Dolder,H; Araújo,APA; Serrão,JE; Neves,CA.
In Hymenoptera, midgut changes begin in the last instar. At this stage, the larval epithelial digestive cells degenerate, leaving only the basal membrane and the regenerative cells which will develop into a new epithelium during the pupal stage and in the adult. Epithelium renewal is followed by changes in volume and shape of the midgut. Morphometric analysis of digestive cells and total midgut volume of Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides (Lepeletier) were conducted to verify whether cell volume increase are sufficient to account for the total midgut volume increase that occurs during metamorphosis. An increase in midgut volume was verified in spite of the scarcity of cell proliferation found during metamorphosis. At the end of metamorphosis, the...

Spatio-temporal structure of the epipelic diatom assemblage from an intertidal mudflat in Marennes-Oleron Bay, France ArchiMer
Haubois, Anne-gaelle; Sylvestre, F; Guarini, Jean-marc; Richard, Pierre; Blanchard, G.
Spatio-temporal changes in taxonomic composition and structure of an epipelic diatom assemblage from an intertidal mudflat on the French Atlantic coast was studied over an annual cycle along a cross-shore transect. The assemblage structure was described by estimating both relative abundance and contribution to biovolume of each species. Results showed that the assemblage was numerically dominated by small-sized species (mean relative abundance of 91%). Large species, however, significantly contributed to the total biovolume (mean contribution to biovolume of 49%). A factorial correspondence analysis indicated that the epipelic assemblage was relatively homogeneous along the cross-shore transect but emphasized the seasonal succession of diatom species. In...
